About Anyone move to Reno from the Bay Area

Anyone move to Reno from the Bay Area?
I've been contemplating a move from San Jose to Reno. Just wanted to see if anyone else has done the same and if they can list pros/cons of Reno. Early 30's, one young kid to raise and two teenagers now. How are the schools? Obviously the cost is much cheaper, but I'm also in semiconductors, so work will be a challenge by leaving Silicon Valley.

well, we moved from San Jose to South Lake Tahoe, but that was back in 1980! Reno is a nice place- I still have lots of friends there and in Tahoe and Carson City, so I visit a couple times a year. The schools are okay, I think- I have a friend in administration in the Reno schools. Reno has really grown and has become a more family oriented town. There are places to go close by to have fun- like Tahoe for hanging out at the lake during the summer and sledding in the winter. There are some minor cultural amentites like some theater and symphony- nothing like the Bay Area though! The cons might be that it IS a town that revolves around gambling- we left Las Vegas for that reason- as well as there truly horrible school system. The snow isn't for everyone- it gets cold! But, the snow isn't nearly as bad as Tahoe- which is why we eventually left there! All in all, I think you'd probably like Reno. I'm assuming you've visited often and have checked it out pretty thoroughly. We've been in TN in a small town outside of Nashville for 7 years now, and it's the best place we've ever lived- we're here to stay!!! Good Luck!

I moved from Santa Cruz two years ago. Pros of Reno. Cheap! a nice 4 bedroom tract home in an upscale area will set you back well under 400k. Close by still to go to the bay area for weekends. Tahoe is nearby. Lots of retail and restaurant choices, also golf and bowling are evrywhere. Cons, possibly your job. Schools are iffy....The high schools are pretty bad from what I have heard they are called "dropout factories" meaning less than 50% of students graduate. Meth/Druggie people downtown and in other areas. Weather is crap. if you ahve any more specific questions let me know
